Top Five Questions about Otoplasty Answered

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in St. Augustine, FLOtoplasty, or ear surgery, is one of our lesser-known services. This surgical cosmetic procedure can be life-changing for individuals who have naturally protruding ears. Because it isn’t well known, there are a lot of questions our patients have when they come in for their consultation. Let’s go over some of the most common questions we get asked at Anh Vu, M.D. so you can get informed before coming in for your first visit.

1. How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of otoplasty in 2018 was about $3,156. That being said, this isn’t the most realistic number to have in mind when considering your otoplasty because it does not include anesthesia fees or other necessary fees that may be associated with your procedure. A more realistic idea of what you will be spending for your ear surgery is closer to $4,000 to $6,000. It’s always a good thing to ask your plastic surgeon if they have any special deals or financing options that can help make your procedure more affordable.

2. What is the Best Age for Otoplasty?

Really, there is no perfect age to undergo otoplasty. As a general rule of thumb, we advise patients to wait until their ears are fully grown and developed which happens at about five years old. Most children that come in for otoplasty are usually between the ages of five and seven. That being said, ear surgery can be done on patients as young as three years old. It is never too late to consider undergoing otoplasty, so don’t let your age deter you from getting the look you desire.

3. How Long Does it Take to Recovery from Otoplasty?

Most patients return to their normal daily routines about seven to 10 days following their otoplasty surgery. During the first few weeks of your recovery, you will be required to wear a compression headband that reduces your swelling and allows your ears to stay pressed into their new position as they heal. Most of your swelling should be gone within three months of your procedure, at which time you’ll be able to see your ultimate results.

4. Does Otoplasty Hurt?

No, otoplasty is not very painful. While any surgery comes with some degree of discomfort, most patients report their pain is well-controlled with the use of pain medication and icing their treated areas. Many patients even say they don’t need pain medication after just two to three days following their ear surgery.

5. Is Otoplasty Permanent?

Yes, the results of your otoplasty ear surgery are permanent. Once the position and appearance of your ears are changed through this surgical procedure, they are changed for good. This means you won’t have to worry about having to undergo any maintenance for your otoplasty.
