St. Augustine Women Ask: What is a Mommy Makeover?

If you’ve ever had a baby, you know the toll it takes on your body after nine months of pregnancy. Even more so if you breastfeed. Your hips are wider, you may have excess skin and fat in the abdominal area and the breasts, and you may be carrying extra weight in your thighs and buttocks as well.

So how do the celebrity moms all seem to get back to their pre-pregnancy body so quickly? There are several contributing factors, so don’t beat yourself up if it’s taking you longer. But one of the methods they employ is to undergo what’s known as a “mommy makeover.”

What’s a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is the term given to a particular combination of plastic surgery procedures, specifically targeted at addressing the issues of the changes that take place in a woman’s body during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The purpose of a mommy makeover is to help restore the pre-pregnancy appearance of a woman’s body after she gives birth and completes breastfeeding. Multiple procedures are performed in several different areas, most typically the abdomen, breasts, and buttocks, and sometimes the genitalia or the waist.

This can include breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and augmentation.

Your mommy makeover will be personalized by your plastic surgeon to meet your cosmetic and aesthetic goals. You may only need one or two procedures, while other women sometimes prefer all of them.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

It’s recommended to wait at least six months since you had your last baby or stopped breastfeeding. It’s also generally recommended to wait until after you’re finished having children prior to having a mommy makeover.

Keep in mind this is not a weight loss technique. While the surgeon may remove some fat during the procedures, you’ll need to have lost most of your baby weight before your consultation. It’s usually best if you’re no more than about 25 pounds from your goal weight.

Otherwise, as long as you’re an adult woman who’s generally healthy, and you want to restore the shape and tone of your body, you’re probably a good candidate to have a mommy makeover.

What You Can Expect After the Mommy Makeover

Your surgeon will have specific instructions for your unique circumstances, but recovery may take from several weeks to a few months. It depends on how many procedures you need and which ones they are.

You’ll likely deal with some swelling and bruising and a feeling of tightness in the first few weeks, but they will begin to diminish naturally as your body heals. You’ll probably be instructed to take it easy and not lift anything very heavy, even small children. It’s a good idea to make sure you have some help for at least the first few weeks.

You won’t see the results from the mommy makeover right away, so be patient. You’ll likely have a good idea about how your body will look in a few months, but the full results may not be evident for six to twelve months. Dr. Vu will go over everything in great detail so you’ll be well-prepared and will know what to expect.
