Liposuction 101: Everything You Need to Know about Lipo

Liposuction Before & After Pictures in St. Augustine, FLLiposuction is one of the most well-known cosmetic procedures available nowadays – and for good reason. This body contouring procedure allows patients to get the slim and trim figure they desire but haven’t been able to achieve with a healthy diet and regular exercise. While patients are aware that liposuction exists, many who come in for a consultation are still a little fuzzy on the details. Dr. Vu and his medical team put together an all-encompassing guide, so you can get a better idea of what you can expect during your liposuction treatment.

How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure that removes unwanted stubborn pocket of fat from your desired treatment areas for a sleek and slim physique. During your liposuction treatment, Dr. Vu will make small incisions around your treatment area. Through these incisions, he’ll be able to insert a thin hollow tube called a cannula. This cannula, hooked up to a gentle vacuum-powered system, will collect and remove your unwanted fatty tissue. The entire treatment process typically takes about one to two hours to complete.

What Areas Can I Get Treated with Liposuction?

Patients typically choose liposuction to remove fat from around their midsection, however, liposuction can be used to treat the following areas as well:

  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Flanks
  • Chin

What Can I Expect After Lipo?

While you will be able to see some results of your liposuction procedure immediately following your surgery, it’s important to note that recovering from your procedure and seeing the full benefits will take some time. Patients will be asked to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and promote healthy healing of the skin flat against their new contours for up to four months following their procedure. Patients typically are able to see the full results of their liposuction about six months following treatment, once all swelling subsides and the compression garment is no longer needed.

Does Fat Come Back After Liposuction?

No, the fat cells removed during liposuction are never replaced with new fat cells! This means your liposuction results have the potential to be permanent. That being said, it’s important to note that existing fat cells still have the potential to migrate and swell creating the illusion of new fat with weight gain. Dr. Vu and his medical team highly encourage patients to lead a healthy and active lifestyle in order to maintain their liposuction results for the long term.
