Breast Reductions vs. Breast Lift

When seeking breast enhancement procedures, many women must first make the decision between a breast reduction and a breast lift. Although these treatments can produce similar results, they are quite different. Below, we’ll examine the characteristics of these breast surgeries so you can determine if they can help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

What’s the Difference Between a Breast Reduction and a Breast Lift?

Breast reductions and breast lifts share a lot of similarities, but they differ in their purpose. A breast reduction is performed primarily for women who are experiencing pain, discomfort or low self-esteem due to the size of the breasts. These women may have difficulties wearing certain articles of clothing, or may find it difficult to exercise and participate in other activities. By reducing the size of the breasts, a breast reduction enhances comfort and improves the quality of life. In contrast, a breast lift is performed for patients who have experienced a loss of volume or perkiness in the breasts. With a breast lift, the goal is to restore the breasts to a more youthful condition. Both treatments can address nipple size and position when necessary.

What Can I Expect from Each Treatment?

reast reductions and breast lifts are quite similar in their treatment processes, despite each treatment having a unique goal. During surgery, an incision will be made around the circumference of each nipple. Then, an additional incision will be made extending downward toward the bottom of the breast. Breast reductions may occasionally involve additional incisions towards the sides, resulting in an anchor-shaped incision. However, this will depend on the patient’s breast size and treatment goals. Once incisions are made, excess breast tissue and skin will be removed to decrease the size of the breasts or restore them to a youthful position.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Both breast reduction and breast lift treatments require patients to take at least a week off of work and other activities in order to rest. During this time, it is common to experience bruising, swelling and soreness in the breasts. Patients will also need to avoid exercise, heavy lifting and related activities for at least a month following their treatment.

Am I A Good Candidate for a Breast Reduction or a Breast Lift?

If you are in good health, but experiencing discomfort, difficulties or dissatisfaction with the size of the breasts, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction. If you have noticed a loss of volume or perkiness in the breasts due to aging, childbirth or breastfeeding, you may be a better candidate for the breast lift procedure.
